Oviedo is the capital city of Asturias, located in northern Spain between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay. Known for its historic centre and welcoming atmosphere, the city combines tradition with a modern urban character. Oviedo has a rich medieval heritage, and it is home to five pre-Romanesque monuments declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1985 and 1998. These landmarks are located throughout the city centre and on Monte Naranco, the hill overlooking Oviedo, reflecting the historical importance of the ancient Kingdom of Asturias. The city is also famous for its old town, the Cathedral of San Salvador – linked to the origins of the Camino de Santiago (St. James’s Way) – and its vibrant public squares.
Oviedo is a cultural reference point in the region, hosting events such as the prestigious Princess of Asturias Awards and offering a strong artistic and academic presence through the University of Oviedo. Local gastronomy is another key part of its identity highlighted by Asturian cider and the traditional “fabada” stew. With its combination of history, green spaces and cultural life, Oviedo constitutes an excellent setting for international conferences and major events.
